The survey of Metrorail passengers was conducted from mid-April to the end of May and included all 86 stations. Days with special events -- such as baseball games, rallies and marches -- were excluded. Metro distributed more than 260,000 questionnaires and received more than 66,000 valid responses.
Based on the survey, Metro estimated the typical number of weekday trips to be 717,760, up 11 percent from the estimated 647,430 trips based on a 2002 survey. About 88 percent of those weekday trips were taken by customers living in the eight jurisdictions that help pay Metro's costs.
Here is a breakdown of weekday trips:
| 2002 | 2007 | Increase | |
| District | 164,337 | 192,503 | 17 percent |
| Maryland | 230,318 | 249,856 | 8 percent |
| Virginia | 183,142 | 190,740 | 4 percent |
The busiest round trips on Metrorail on a typical weekday are, in order:
- Farragut North to Union Station (Red Line)
- Shady Grove to Farragut North (Red Line)
- Metro Center to Union Station (Red Line)
- Dupont Circle to Union Station (Red Line)
- Vienna to Farragut West (Orange Line)
