"The contract is nice and all, but I feel like I play the exact same game before and after," Romo said, wearing a tattered T-shirt after the Giants game. "That's why I wanted to get most of the [negotiating] work done during the bye week, so people wouldn't be talking about it."
[an error occurred while processing this directive]Garrett calls his star pupil a quick study, and a work still in progress.
"He's just continuing to play," Garrett said. "He's learning every week, learning from the good things that happen to him and the bad things that happen to him. He wants to get better. He wants to be a good player. He has the right approach. . . . You could see on tape last year that he was instinctive. He's a natural competitor, and he's a learner."
Phillips wasn't as restrained, saying after the Giants game that the team has a "great offense," not just a good one. Romo has a safety blanket of a receiver in tight end Jason Witten and the Cowboys have two effective runners in tailbacks Julius Jones and Marion Barber, but Romo wasn't getting too carried away.
"I think we're doing some pretty good things," he said. "I haven't been in the league as long as he has, so I wouldn't know what a great offense is. I just know that we're putting some points up at times, and that helps."
Phillips still has some work to do with a defense that ranks seventh in the league overall (based on yards allowed) but only tied for 22nd in scoring. Still, the Cowboys have plenty to savor after consecutive NFC East road wins at Philadelphia and the Meadowlands, and now they have three straight games at home beginning with Sunday's matchup with the Washington Redskins.
"This was a step for us toward reaching some of our goals [but] we can't have a letdown at home," safety Ken Hamlin said. "Now we have to play well at home."
