A Grand Design

Lots of kids create T-shirts for themselves. But Laura González designed one that approximately 100,000 people will wear this Saturday.

Laura, a fourth-grader at Elsie Whitlow Stokes Community Freedom Public Charter School in Northwest, received a $500 savings bond for her colorful design. It decorates the shirts that will be given to participants in Fannie Mae Foundation's annual Help the Homeless Walkathon.

More than 250 D.C. elementary school students entered the design contest.

Paddle Power

Two Australian adventurers set off Tuesday for New Zealand, 1,400 miles away, in a kayak. They hope to become the first kayakers to cross the Tasman Sea. The crossing is expected to take 40 to 50 days.

James Castrission and Justin Jones, ages 25 and 24, are in a kayak designed to handle 40-foot waves.

They have a satellite phone with them -- just in case.
