Moments after hauling in a 43-yard touchdown pass to put Sherando ahead late in the fourth quarter, Derek Crosen made a game-saving tackle at the 1-yard line to clinch the 12th-ranked Warriors' 21-14 victory over James Wood in the Virginia AA Region II Division 4 semifinals last night in Stephens City.
Crosen, a senior, caught nine passes for 114 yards and two touchdowns. The Warriors (11-0) will host No. 20 Park View next week in the Region II title game.
Crosen caught the go-ahead touchdown with 38 seconds left in the fourth, capping a 69-yard drive. On the ensuing possession, James Wood marched to the Sherando 8 and got off the final play with one second left. Quarterback Trae Tinsman found running back Tyler Orndorff in the flat, but Crosen came out of the secondary to make the tackle.
Sherando quarterback Ross Metheny completed 24 of 38 passes for three touchdowns, and running back Markeith Brisco rushed for 166 yards.
James Wood finishes 8-3.Spartans Survive
West Springfield place kicker Tyler Bitancurt booted a 19-yard field goal with nine seconds left to lift the host Spartans over Robinson, 30-28, in the Northern Region Division 6 semifinals.
West Springfield (10-2), making its first playoff appearance since 1993, will visit second-ranked Westfield next week in the region championship.
Robinson (6-6) scored a touchdown with 2:12 left to pull ahead 28-27. On the ensuing possession, the Spartans marched behind quarterback Bryn Renner, who went 4 of 4 on the drive. . . .
Running back Mulku Kalokoh and quarterback Dearius Thomas each rushed for a touchdown to lead seventh-ranked Potomac to a 17-7 victory over Fauquier in the Northwestern Region Division 5 semifinals in Dumfries.
The unbeaten Panthers (11-0) will host GW-Danville in the region championship next week.Hopson Leads Patuxent
Patuxent senior quarterback C.J. Hopson shook off an early injury to account for three touchdowns as the No. 11 Panthers rolled to a 46-16 win over Douglass.
Hopson, injured on his first series, returned to lead Patuxent (11-0) on an 11-play touchdown drive in which he ran for 18 yards on third and 10 and threw for 11 yards on fourth and seven. He finished 10 of 16 for 123 yards and one passing touchdown and ran nine times for 67 yards and two touchdowns.
