Washington's charter schools are continuing their phenomenal growth this school year. School officials say the independently operated public schools now count about 22,200 students, up from roughly 19,700 the previous fall.
[an error occurred while processing this directive]That means about 30 percent of all D.C. public school students attend charters. Meantime, enrollment in the city's regular public schools has dipped below 50,000, to about 49,600.
In October 2005, about 17,500 students were enrolled in D.C. charters, according to audited figures kept by the D.C. Office of the State Superintendent of Education. The totals were about 15,500 in 2004 and about 13,700 in 2003, meaning D.C. charter school enrollment went up more than 60 percent in four years.
