Principals or athletic trainers will receive weather updates on their cellphones and can decide such things as whether to hold a sports team practice if, for example, the heat index changes suddenly or lightning strikes nearby.
The 54,000-student school system is the first in the area to purchase the weather service, which is operated by Germantown-based WeatherBug. The weather updates will cost about $900 a month, school officials said.
I-95 FATALITY
Driver Shot, Killed by Trooper Is Identified
The man who police say led them on a two-mile pursuit on Interstate 95 on Sunday morning, then was shot and killed when he reportedly tried to run down a Virginia state trooper, was identified yesterday as Marc D. Greenberg, 41, of Stafford County.
State police said Greenberg was driving north in a 1996 Ford Taurus when a sheriff's deputy tried to pull him over in Stafford for having expired license plates. Police said Greenberg refused to stop until he was pulled over by a state trooper near the 141-mile marker about 8:45 a.m. When the trooper got out of his car, the Taurus rolled forward and struck him. The trooper then shot into the Taurus and killed Greenberg, state police said.
The trooper was not seriously injured. His name was not released, but Sgt. Les Tyler, a state police spokesman, said he is 27 years old and has been on the force for five years. He is on administrative leave with pay, Tyler said.
