"A great little day trip to get into the holiday spirit is right down [I-]95," writes Stephanie Spear, 24, of McLean. The graduate of the University of Richmond has nothing but fond memories of the town she called home for several years. The day should include a stop at Palani Drive for a lunch of wraps and panini and "the best chai tea you'll ever have," she gushes. (On a recent trip, Spear went to another place for lunch and vows not to make that mistake when she goes back for holiday shopping with friends.)

Once you're warmed up, stroll down Cary Street to take in holiday decorations and do some shopping. "Be sure to stop in at Lane Sanson for some fantastic holiday decorations and ornaments," Spear advises.

But no trip would be complete without stopping in the lobby of the stately Jefferson Hotel. How stately? "The main stairway of the lobby was the inspiration for the famous staircase in 'Gone With the Wind,' " Spear tells us. (It's a story many believe but is hard to confirm.) What's really not to be missed is the gingerbread house the size of a child's playhouse in the lobby. "Here you have this very formal hotel -- the kind of place your parents tell you to keep your hands in your pockets -- and there's this enormous gingerbread house crying out to be touched!" she says.
