Despite the absence of Gilbert Arenas, rookie forward-center Oleksiy Pecherov and center Etan Thomas, the Washington Wizards do not have plans to add another player at this time, according to a source with knowledge of the situation.
[an error occurred while processing this directive]The Wizards entered the season with 13 active players -- two fewer than the league minimum -- because they are close to the league's luxury tax threshold of $67.86 million.
Teams that exceed that amount must pay a dollar-for-dollar tax. Following the season, that money is pooled and distributed among the teams that stayed under the cap.
Arenas is expected to miss at least three months. Pecherov, who is still wearing a walking boot to protect a hairline fracture in his right ankle, is expected to be out at least two more weeks. Thomas, who underwent open-heart surgery last month, is out indefinitely.
When asked what his goal was heading into a four-game road trip that begins tonight at Memphis, Wizards Coach Eddie Jordan's answer was simple.
"Stay healthy, that's first of all," Jordan said after last night's 123-115 home loss to Golden State. "Get healthy. And then we want to continue to play hard and stay organized."
Walking in Memphis
The Wizards and Grizzlies, who dropped to 3-9 with a loss at San Antonio last night, split a pair of meetings last season with both teams winning at home. Grizzlies guard Mike Conley (shoulder) is out indefinitely (shoulder) and forward Darko Milicic (thumb) is listed as day-to-day.
