Forgoing the Flag

After Santana Moss's first-quarter fumble, the wide receiver indicated he was down before he fumbled, and Coach Joe Gibbs balled up the red challenge flag in his left hand, in anticipation of a toss. But television replays showed the ball had clearly come loose before Moss was down, and the challenge flag never left Gibbs's hand.

Tampa Bay safety Tanard Jackson was in the right place at the right time in the first quarter. Twice, actually. The rookie from Silver Spring, who played at Bullis, recovered both Redskins fumbles in the quarter. Those were the first fumble recoveries of his career.
