Two pedestrians were killed yesterday in separate incidents in Montgomery County, county police said. They said one of the incidents was a hit-and-run -- apparently the third hit-and-run fatality in the Washington area in the past three days.

In last night's hit-and-run, police said, Ronald Bender, 64, of South Dakota was struck by a car about 5:45 p.m. as he crossed South Frederick Avenue in the Gaithersburg area.

Police said Bender was crossing in an easterly direction in the 700 block near North Westland Drive. The driver of the car that hit him did not remain at the scene, police said.

They described the vehicle as a burgundy 1999 Mitsubishi Eclipse convertible with Virginia tags KLH 5957. It should have front-end damage and a damaged windshield, police said.

In the second fatal incident, a woman who was about 60 years old was struck and killed about 8:35 p.m. at Crystal Rock Drive and Germantown Road in the Germantown area. Police said the driver in that incident remained at the scene.
