Here's an idea for eco-conscious gift givers. Early next month, Target is introducing what it says is the first biodegradable gift card made of PHA (polyhydroxyalkanoate), a resin made of corn and other sugar-producing plants.

The selection of 12 eco-friendly cards has seasonal themes such as candy canes, holiday lights and snowmen. A Target official said the PHA gift cards will be available only for a limited time.

Meanwhile, the popularity of gift cards is projected to keep going up. Last holiday season the average consumer purchased 3.73 gift cards worth $39.16, according to the National Retail Federation.
