Whitehurst Stays
Readers anxious about the future of the Whitehurst Freeway, which some regard as an eyesore but others see as an important link to downtown Washington, asked me to report D.C. Mayor Adrian Fenty's position on whether it should be torn down.
The Whitehurst will stay put, he told me Tuesday while he was out on Benning Road NE highlighting the District's plan to install hundreds of modern bus shelters in the city.
"I support the existing freeway and traffic system," the mayor said of the Whitehurst.
Transportation Director Emeka Moneme, who was with him, said the transportation department was no longer pursuing a study that included freeway alternatives such as a tunnel or an enhancement of K Street NW. No good solution had emerged on where to send the Whitehurst traffic, Moneme said.
Tree-lighting Traffic
The annual lighting of the National Christmas Tree on the Ellipse provides holiday cheer for many but darkens the mood of some commuters who encounter the congestion around it. This year's tree-lighting ceremony is scheduled for 5 p.m. Thursday. Streets near the White House and Ellipse are usually blocked off from mid-afternoon to early evening.
Walk-Bike Plan
The public can review Alexandria's draft Pedestrian and Bicycle Mobility Plan from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at Jefferson-Houston School for Arts and Academics, 1501 Cameron St., near the King Street Metro station.
Alexandria Bridge
The first new span of the Route 1-Monroe Avenue Bridge in Alexandria is scheduled to open tomorrow. The three-lane span will have a reversible center lane to help with morning and evening traffic. The second span is to be completed late next year.
Purple Line Meetings
The following sessions with the Maryland Transit Administration, all from 5 to 8:30 p.m., will offer information on anticipated ridership and travel times, cost estimates, routes and the project's schedule: Monday, East Silver Spring Elementary School, 631 Silver Spring Ave.; Wednesday, College Park City Hall, 4500 Knox Rd.; Dec. 10, Langley Park Community Center, 1500 Merrimac Dr., Hyattsville; Dec. 12, Bethesda-Chevy Chase High School, 4301 East West Hwy.; Dec. 13, West Lanham Hills Recreation Center, 7700 Decatur Rd., Landover Hills.
Bus Line Study
The third round of public sessions on the plan to improve the Metrobus 30s Line will be held at two locations in Washington next month. Both sessions are from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.: Thursday, in the Great Hall at St. Columba's Episcopal Church, 4201 Albemarle St. NW; Dec. 10, in St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church's Bailey Room, 2800 Pennsylvania Ave. SE.
