"We're taking steps, and we took a big one today," said A.D. Vassello, who had a game-high 18 points for the Hokies.
Hobbs may have a different opinion. "We got outplayed in every phase of the game," he said. "It's just that basic."
Villanova Is Master of the Big 5
Scottie Reynolds (Herndon) scored 27 points and 25th-ranked Villanova made it a record 13 straight victories against their Big 5 city rivals with a 101-93 win over Temple in Philadelphia.
Antonio Pena and Shane Clark added 17 points apiece for the Wildcats (7-1), who needed a second-half surge to take control against the Owls.
Temple (4-5) was the last Big 5 team to beat Villanova, back on Dec. 4, 2004.
Dionte Christmas had 20 points and 11 rebounds for the Owls. La Salle, Saint Joseph's and Penn are the other schools that make up the city series. Penn won 12 straight in the series from 1972 to '75.
¿ WASHINGTON ST. 72, PORTLAND ST. 60: Aron Baynes made all nine of his field goal attempts and scored 23 points for the eighth-ranked Cougars in Pullman, Wash.
Washington State (9-0) is off to its best start since the 1991-92 team opened 12-0. The Cougars shot 72 percent in the first half and 65 percent for the game.
Deonte Huff scored 18 points for the Vikings (6-4) , who are 4-38 against Pacific-10 teams.
