RICHMOND, Va. (AP) -- An annual review by a national teachers union ranks Virginia teachers 31st in the nation when it comes to pay.

The National Education Association puts the average Virginia teacher salary at $44,727. That's down three spots from last year and about $6,000 less than the national average salary.

According to the NEA, California teachers earned the most, with an average salary of $63,640, while South Dakota ranked last, with an average salary of $35,378.

The Virginia Department of Education uses a different formula to compute average teacher salaries. It says Virginia teachers are making an average that's closer to $50,000.
