Alex Rodriguez set another record for baseball's highest contract, finalizing his 10-year, $275 million agreement with the New York Yankees yesterday.
Rodriguez set the previous mark with his 10-year, $252 million deal with Texas in December 2000. Traded to the Yankees in 2004, he opted out of that contract Oct. 28, during the final game of the World Series.
Yankees senior vice president Hank Steinbrenner said New York would not negotiate further with Rodriguez because his decision eliminated the $21.3 million subsidy the Yankees were to receive from Texas from 2008 to '10, a figure negotiated at the time of the trade.
But Rodriguez then approached the Yankees through a managing director at Goldman Sachs and negotiated his new deal in early November without agent Scott Boras.
Meanwhile, the Boston Red Sox did not tender a contract to reliever Brendan Donnelly, hours before he was named yesterday in the Mitchell Report about the illegal use of performance-enhancing substances in baseball. . . .
Right-hander Brandon Duckworth avoided salary arbitration and agreed to a one-year, $600,000 contract with the Kansas City Royals that includes $155,000 in performance incentives. . . .
Right-hander Justin Miller signed a one-year, $750,000 contract to remain with the Florida Marlins next season. . . .
The Minnesota Twins and shortstop Adam Everett agreed to terms on a one-year contract yesterday, a day after he was non-tendered by the Houston Astros.
