A brief timeline of Discovery's corporate history:

1982: John S. Hendricks incorporates Cable Education Network.

June 17, 1985: Discovery Channel goes on the air.

1985-86: Hendricks, strapped for cash, seeks investors. He lands Herb Allen and cable king John Malone, who initially kicks in $500,000. Malone begins ongoing partnership with Hendricks and adds to ownership stake in company. Cox Cable and Newhouse Broadcasting invest; each eventually gets a 25 percent stake.

2000: AT&T buys Malone's TCI cable company. Malone's Liberty Media assets -- including his now 49 percent stake in Discovery -- are spun off as stand-alone company.

2005: Malone spins off newly created Discovery Holding from Liberty Media. Assets include Discovery Communications and Ascent Media Group, a company that provides creative and technical services to television and film productions.

Dec. 13, 2007: Discovery Holding announces plan to go public, expects to begin trading next year.
