Hark those herald angels sing. So do Celine, Jose, Mariah, Richard and Karen, Perry and Bing. And let's not forget the critters: dogs barking "Jingle Bells," rodents hankering for hula-hoops, Porky Pig mangling "Blue Christmas."

Admit it: You've been humming along. So have we, but instead of dreaming of a white Christmas, we were wondering where our readers could decompress before, during and after the holidays -- using those Christmas carols that we can't get out of our head.

That's how we ended up communing with cows in Pennsylvania and carousing with cabernet in Virginia wine country. We found a Buddhist retreat in the mountains of West Virginia and a log cabin tucked into a Western Maryland state park. In their own way, each provided tidings of comfort and joy, comfort and joy.

Feliz Navidad.
