The approach of the holidays has caused the following to happen:
¿ When 10 Brooklyn-bound subway riders yelling "Merry Christmas" attacked four riders who replied "Happy Hanukkah," the hero turned out to be a Muslim college student.
Hassan Askari said he tried to fight off the attackers, giving Walter Adler, one of those who were assaulted, a chance to summon police by pulling an emergency brake. Police charged six people with assault and four with unlawful assembly. The incident is being investigated as a hate crime.
"I did what I thought was right," said Askari, a student at Berkeley College in Manhattan, who was beaten.
"That a random Muslim kid helped some Jewish kids -- that's what's positive about New York," said Adler, 23.
