Hawks F Shelden Williams was carjacked at gunpoint yesterday before Atlanta's home game against the Bobcats.
Police said two suspects were arrested late yesterday afternoon at Arbor Place Mall in Douglas County, near Atlanta. The suspects were in Williams's car and were attempting a robbery, according to an officer who answered the phone at the Douglasville Police Department.
The officer, who declined to give her name, said one suspect was taken to a hospital after suffering dog bites from the police canine unit during the arrest.
Hawks spokesman Arthur Triche said Williams provided police with the license plate number of the vehicle used by the carjackers, leading to a search that led to the arrests.
"I'm just glad that he's safe," Hawks Coach Mike Woodson said.
"Cars and things like that, jewelry, money, all that can be replaced."
Triche said the car was damaged when found.
Williams was in uniform for last night's game. He told Woodson and other team officials about the incident. He said the car was stolen outside a barbershop.
Williams declined comment to the Associated Press.
-- MARTIN SUSPENDED: Nuggets F Kenyon Martin was suspended without pay for one game by the NBA, keeping him out of last night's game in San Antonio.
Martin was assessed a flagrant foul for striking the Hornets' Melvin Ely on the head with an elbow in the second period of the Nuggets' 105-99 win Wednesday. Ely has a fractured left eye socket and missed the Hornets' 89-80 loss at Dallas on Friday night.
"What happened with Melvin in Wednesday's game was inadvertent. I apologized to him on the court and again after the game. He told me he knew it was an accident," Martin said in a statement released by the team.
