The weather at Giants Stadium appeared to be a major factor in the opening period as both teams struggled to move the ball. The Redskins got the only points of the quarter when Shaun Suisham kicked a 49-yard field goal that wobbled considerably in the wind but had plenty of distance. Washington began that scoring drive at its 49-yard line after a poor punt by Jeff Feagles went only 35 yards. Running back Clinton Portis carried for 13, 9 and 3 yards before quarterback Todd Collins threw two straight incompletions. Collins, replacing the injured Jason Campbell, made his first start since Dec. 14, 1997, when he was with Buffalo.
