Shhhhh . . .

THANK YOU FOR your interesting article on Bhante G's center ["Silent Night," Dec. 16]. There is also a retreat center in Stanley, Va., in the northern Shenandoah Valley. I don't know much about the center, so contact them for more info (Lotus Gardens, http://lotusgardens.org/default.cfm).

I am a member of a Buddhist center ( http://Guhyasamaja.org) that just concluded a series of classes on meditation, which has, among other things, awakened an interest in me in retreat centers. Hopefully, one day my wife will let me visit one or two.

I HAVE NOT been to the Bhavana Center but have a friend who has been there several times. I have gone on two Vipassana retreats in the tradition taught by S.N. Goenka. It is 10-plus hours a day of sitting meditation. You are in noble silence for more than nine of 10 days. (Absolutely no talking except when you are asking an assistant teacher a question.) This is an excellent way to purify the mind. Check it out at http://www.dhamma.org.

Hope you will continue to meditate now that you are back in the "real" world.
