At this early stage of her tenure as music director of the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra, it can be safely stated that Marin Alsop is fun to watch, has good programming ideas, and ranks as probably the most uneven conductor I've ever encountered. She is strongest in "workaholic" stuff that requires her to be cuing instruments everywhere at once, and rather alarmingly weak in anything that calls for contemplation and sustained linear intensity. Will she be able to fill the shoes of the lamented Yuri Temirkanov? Watch this space.
