The rainy conditions at the beginning of the game did not seem to bother the Redskins, who moved to the Cowboys 37 on their opening possession before punting. After forcing Dallas to punt, the Redskins took over at their 27 and moved to the Cowboys 23 when safety Ken Hamlin was called for a 20-yard pass interference against Santana Moss. On the next play, running back Clinton Portis ran for a touchdown off left tackle. Portis squeezed through the line of scrimmage thanks to a block by fullback Mike Sellers on linebacker DeMarcus Ware and then broke through tackle attempts by Roy Williams and Anthony Henry.
