Wizards guard Roger Mason Jr. emerged from the locker room after practice yesterday and proudly showed off a burgundy-and-gold Redskins jersey with his name and number (8) on the back.

"I just texted Clinton [Portis] to tell him congratulations," said Mason, a Washington native who attended Redskins games with his father as a child. "They're rolling right, and after everything they've been through, it's great to watch."

Coach Eddie Jordan, also a Washington native, praised Joe Gibbs and the Redskins' coaching staff. "My hat goes off to them," Jordan said. "I'm proud of them."

Roster Move

With guard Antonio Daniels set to return to the lineup for tomorrow's game against Detroit, the team released Mike Wilks.

Wilks was signed to a nonguaranteed contract on Dec. 19 and appeared in four games, averaging 1.3 points and 1.5 rebounds in 11 minutes. Should more injuries strike, it's possible the Wizards could re-sign Wilks or add another player on Saturday when teams are eligible to sign players to 10-day contracts.

Formidable Foe

The Wizards will practice again today in preparation for their game against the Pistons, who are 24-7 after beating Milwaukee yesterday. The Pistons have the second-best mark in the Eastern Conference behind the Boston Celtics (26-3).
