WASHINGTON (AP) -- Some Verizon Wireless customers trying to phone their Happy New Year wishes experienced service outages soon after midnight Tuesday morning.

The company says it received many complaints about service problems during the first few hours of 2008.

Verizon spokesman John Johnson says it was a software problem made worse in the D.C. area because of high call volume.

It took about four hours to fix the glitch.
