No kissing cousins here: Tonight's smackdown in Iowa pits Mike Huckabee against his 10th cousin once removed -- Mitt Romney.
The latest branch of family tree dysfunction comes courtesy of Washington genealogist William Addams Reitwiesner, the Library of Congress employee who discovered Hillary Clinton's secret blood tie to Madonna, and Fred Thompson's kinship to Elvis Presley as an eighth cousin once removed. (Yeah, we thought it would help his campaign, too.)
Huckabee's other surprisingly blue bloodlines, according to Reitwiesner's elaborate research: President Bush (a ninth cousin via a set of Connecticut great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-grandparents), Nancy Reagan and Anderson Cooper (ninth cousins once removed) and Princess Diana (10th cousin).
And yup -- we figured that Huckabee would be related to Bill Clinton somehow, given that they're both from Hope, Ark. But nope -- at least there's nothing in the record books.Gilbert Arenas: He'll Move Mountains for His Little Girls
What does an NBA superstar get his kids for Christmas? Gilbert Arenas shared the story of his shopping trip to FAO Schwarz for babies Alijah and Izela on his blog-- and as always, it's best the way he tells it:
They had a little display train set in the store and it looked like it was going in and out of mountains and stuff. . . . So I told the salesman, "Yeah, umm, I want that right there." . . . He gave me this box. I was like, "Shouldn't this box be a little bit bigger? Because I don't think those mountains can fit in this little box right here." He was like, "Oh, no, no, no. You're confused. . . . The mountains and the snow and all this stuff, that don't come with it. Just the train and the train tracks and then you just put it on your carpet."
Then I'm like, "Well, then it's not that attractive anymore. . . . If I'm going to buy this, I want it to look like this." . . . They had to call the people who actually put the display up in the store and they're going to bring it and set it up at my house next week. I told them that I didn't want the little train on the carpet. I had that when I was little. That wasn't fun.
No word from Agent Zero's rep on how things went with the FAO Schwarz window display folks. He writes that he also picked up some giant teddy bears, a "life-sized" elephant and a tot-size Mercedes. Also a TV and karaoke machine for Izela, who turned 2 on Dec. 24.Banged Up but Lucky in Brussels
Last thing Jim Rosapepe remembers is walking out of his Brussels hotel for dinner a few days before Christmas. The Maryland state senator woke up the next morning in the ER -- the victim of a hit-and-run driver.
"Best as they could tell me, I got hit and knocked against a pole," said Rosapepe, a former U.S. ambassador to Romania, who was in the Belgian capital on business. He suffered bruises, a black eye and two fractures in his right leg. "It sounds terrible, but when you talk to people in Shock Trauma, their attitude is there's not a whole lot of people who get hit by cars who come out of it that easily."
His wife, broadcaster Sheilah Kast, flew over to spend Christmas with him. After surgery and a one-week stay in the hospital, he flew back for a second surgery at University of Maryland Medical Center in Baltimore. Home again in College Park with a pin in his leg, the 56-year-old Democrat says he's ready to tackle the three-month legislative session that starts in Annapolis on Wednesday -- though he'll spend much of it in a wheelchair or on crutches.
"It just means I'm going to have to sit down a lot more, stay seated," he said. "But that's not hard in the legislature."LOVE, ETC.
