¿ A Jan. 3 A-section article incorrectly implied that the Maryland Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services had custody of a man who escaped from Laurel Regional Hospital on Nov. 13. The man was in the custody of a state trooper when he escaped.

¿ A Jan. 3 Metro article about a lawsuit filed by Republican legislators in Maryland to challenge new tax increases misstated the chronology of events involved in the case. The state Senate adjourned Nov. 9 and reconvened Nov. 15.

¿ A Jan. 3 Metro item incorrectly said that construction of the new Richard Montgomery High School marked the first time in Montgomery County that a school remained open while a new one was built on the existing campus. ¿ A Dec. 30 Style & Arts column incorrectly said that the recording industry "maintains that it is illegal for someone who has legally purchased a CD to transfer that music into his computer." In a copyright-infringement lawsuit, the industry's lawyer argued that the actions of an Arizona man, the defendant, were illegal because the songs were located in a "shared folder" on his computer for distribution on a peer-to-peer network.

¿ A Dec. 26 Style article about the first map to use the name "America" incorrectly said that Christopher Columbus was the first European explorer to reach the Americas. Viking settlers reached the Americas before Columbus.
