The Redskins got the ball first but had to punt after managing four yards from their 31. Seattle took over and marched to the Redskins 41, but on third down and four, quarterback Matt Hasselbeck missed a wide-open Ben Obomanu down the right side of the field. Had Hasselbeck thrown the ball more accurately, Obomanu might have been able to gain considerable yardage.
After a Seattle punt that pinned the Redskins at their 4-yard line, Washington moved out of the shadow of its end zone with a nine-yard pass to Antwaan Randle El and a seven-yarder to Santana Moss. On third and one, Clinton Portis was held to no gain, forcing a punt.
The Seahawks took over at the Washington 45 after punt returner Nate Burleson returned Derrick Frost's kick 20 yards. Running back Maurice Morris converted a critical third down when he ran for six yards on third and one. Shaun Alexander then carried for 13 yards. He lost the ball at the end of the play, but after an officials' review, Seattle kept possession.
On the ensuing play, fullback Leonard Weaver carried around the right side for a 17-yard touchdown run. As Weaver approached the pylon, he dove and got the ball across the plane of the goal line before he lost the ball and fell out of bounds.
