Sophomores Andrew Tendrich and Drew College, who play for the junior varsity, said the door leading to the bathrooms was locked Tuesday and that those in need of the facilities had to go outside.
When the bathrooms are open, as they were again yesterday, players indicated that nobody uses them because they have not been cleaned.
Many players' parents said their concern has been less about the conditions in the old building and more about losing home-court advantage while they wait for the new gym to open. The Rockets lost the game that was moved to Blake, 50-43.
Kate Savage, president of the Richard Montogmery chapter of the PTA, said there were three parents who complained on the school's Internet mailing list about students practicing in the old building. But Maxey said there have been many complaints about various aspects of the move from the old building to the new building.
"There are always going to be individuals who aren't going to be satisfied with what we don't have," he said. "Yes, it's unfortunate that the new gym isn't ready. But if the new school wasn't ready, we'd still be in the old building and we'd be there through June."
The players won't have to wait nearly that long, so in the meantime, they'll try to cope.
"I have to take my inhaler out about twice in one practice," Hartnett said. "When I do running drills, I try not to go full speed because it gets bad."
