Trained dogs to help secure U.S. Super Bowl sites

PHOENIX (Reuters) - Dogs trained to detect explosives, especially the kind used by Islamic extremists, will help secure next month's Super Bowl, the biggest event in the U.S. sporting calendar, law authorities said on Monday. An undisclosed number of specially trained Labrador Retrievers has been brought to Phoenix to secure venues for the National Football League's championship clash on Feb 3, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) said.

Athletes to get a taste of China in Beijing village

BEIJING (Reuters) - The Athletes Village at the Beijing Olympics will be as good as any at previous Games and give guests a real taste of China, table tennis great Deng Yaping said on Tuesday. The four-times Olympic champion, now deputy director of the Village, said organizers hoped to give the 16,000 athletes and officials a feel of China's "long history and rich culture," without disrupting their preparations.

Sixth seed Chakvetadze through after Petkovic injury

MELBOURNE (Reuters) - Sixth seed Anna Chakvetadze advanced to the second round of the Australian Open on Tuesday when Germany's Andrea Petkovic retired with a right knee injury in the first game of their match. The 20-year-old Petkovic, ranked 92, suffered the injury when stretching for a forehand and after treatment, the tearful German told Chakvetadze she was unable to continue.

Seven-times Formula One world champion Michael Schumacher quit at the end of 2006 but his love for the sport meant he came out of retirement to test for Ferrari late last year.

Three dimensional images become significant tool

LONDON (Reuters) - Three-dimensional images, which helped to show that double amputee Oscar Pistorius receives considerable advantages from carbon fiber blade attachments, have become a significant tool in the drive to improve athletic performances. The South African runner, who had both legs amputated below the knee as a child, failed on Monday in his bid to compete at August's Beijing Olympics and has now been banned from competing against able-bodied athletes.

Bosh powers Raptors to OT win over Trail Blazers

TORONTO (Reuters) - Chris Bosh powered his way to 38 points to lift the Toronto Raptors to a 116-109 double overtime victory over the Portland Trail Blazers on Sunday. Bosh also had a game-high 14 rebounds and three blocked shots.
