Huntingtown

Not the Original Ship

Patrick Reynolds's Jan. 13 "Flashbacks" comic strip asserted that in 1799 Thomas Truxton commanded the same USS Constellation that is moored in Baltimore today.

Although there was once debate as to whether the Constellation was the rebuilt 1797 frigate or a new ship built in 1854, that debate was settled during the ship's renovation in the 1990s. It is not the original Constellation, as exhibits accompanying the ship now make clear.

Reynolds further garbled the facts by asserting that the 1797 Constellation was the Navy's last warship powered only by sails. That might be true if applied to a ship built in 1854, but not the original.
