Squeezing every inch out of a 1,200-square-foot cabin was challenging even for seasoned designer Kelly Stieff. She sought out multi-functional furniture and ways to control clutter. Her good ideas would work in an apartment, condo or other small spaces.

To make the most of downstairs space that does double duty as master bedroom and family room, Stieff ordered a queen-size fold-away Wallbed made of birch stained espresso ( http://www.wallbedsinfo.com). It had to fit exactly between two French doors.

She bought four leather storage cubes on casters with leather cushions that reverse to become removable tray tops. They are easy to move around, provide storage for guests' stuff or videos and games, and can be used as end tables or extra seating.

A 48-inch-square walnut coffee table has four leather-topped stools that fit neatly under it. They can be pulled out for extra seating or dining in front of the fire.

An empty space behind a bathroom cabinet has been fitted with six small shelves holding baskets where family members and guests can stash their toiletries, keeping clutter off the counter. The wire-grid baskets are sold at the Container Store ( http://www.containerstore.com).
