Moreno Stays With D.C., But Gomez Appears Out
As D.C. United moved closer to adding several additional international players to the roster, the club yesterday secured the assistance of its long-serving foreign-born star and prepared to bid farewell to its Argentine playmaker.
Bolivian forward Jaime Moreno, who has played all but one of his 12 MLS seasons in Washington and is the league's all-time leader in goals, has signed a new contract with United. Terms were not disclosed, but General Manager Dave Kasper said last week that Moreno had agreed to a salary reduction in exchange for two guaranteed years. (Most MLS contracts are year to year.) Moreno, 34, earned $275,000 in 2007.
"Jaime has long provided a major impact for us on the field and in the locker room," Kasper said in a written statement. "His skill and savvy remain unmatched in this league and we're expecting more of the same this season."
Meantime, Argentine midfielder Christian Gomez appears on his way out. Sources familiar with the situation said contract negotiations with the 2006 MLS most valuable player remain unresolved and the club is close to replacing him with Marcelo Gallardo, a former Argentina national team standout who most recently played for French club Paris Saint-Germain. Barring last-minute complications, the Gallardo deal is to be announced early next week.
United has already added Argentine forward Franco Niell and Colombian defender Gonzalo Mart¿nez, and is finalizing a deal with Peruvian goalkeeper Jos¿ Carvallo. The club is also believed to be in talks with Argentine defender Gonzalo Peralta.
In other player moves, backup goalie Jay Nolly and reserve forward Nicholas Addlery have signed with Vancouver in USL1, a second-tier league. United had declined to exercise options on their contracts.
