D.C. United continued its massive roster makeover yesterday, finalizing a deal to sell 19-year-old midfielder Bryan Arguez to Bundesliga club Hertha Berlin and moving closer to acquiring three more South Americans, sources close to the various negotiations said.

Hertha will pay a transfer fee of approximately $350,000, according to one source. United is to collect two-thirds of that figure and apply it toward player signings. MLS, which owns all player contracts, receives the balance. An additional fee will be paid if Hertha sells Arguez in the future.

Both Hertha and United are expected to formally announce the deal Monday.

Arguez, United's 2007 first-round pick, was a member of the U.S. under-20 national team that advanced to the quarterfinals of the world championship in Canada last summer. For United, he did not make any regular season appearances and started nine reserve division games. Granted permission to train with Hertha early this month, the 6-foot-2 Miami native impressed coaches and prompted the German club to initiate negotiations with United and MLS.

He is the second D.C. player to be sold to a European club this offseason, joining goalkeeper Troy Perkins (Valerenga, Norway).

Having already announced the acquisition of Argentine forward Franco Niell and Colombian defender Gonzalo Mart¿nez, United is preparing to introduce Peruvian goalkeeper Jos¿ Carvallo, Argentine defender Gonzalo Peralta and two-time Argentina World Cup midfielder Marcelo Gallardo in the coming days.

Players are scheduled to report to the club this weekend and participate in their first outdoor workout Monday before training camp moves to Bradenton, Fla. Gallardo's arrival could be delayed by paperwork.
