$95 Million in Tax Incentives Offered to 6 Areas
Mayor Adrian M. Fenty (D) announced plans yesterday to offer $95 million in tax incentives to spur business development in six neighborhood corridors as part of the District's Great Streets program.
The city will finance development bonds using tax increment financing, a process by which the debt service is paid off with increased tax revenue that results from the growth of new businesses. The program will target these corridors: $10 million for Martin Luther King Jr. Avenue SE/South Capitol Street; $25 million for H Street NE; $25 million for Seventh Street/Georgia Avenue NW; $10 million for Petworth; $15 million for Minnesota Avenue/Benning Road; and $10 million for Pennsylvania Avenue SE.
Developers have until April 18 to apply for the funding, which is reserved for projects of 10,000 square feet or larger. More information can be found at http://www.dcbiz.dc.gov.

2006 POLICE CASE
Detective Is Charged With Assaulting Suspect
A D.C. police detective was indicted yesterday on an assault charge stemming from an incident in October 2006 involving a handcuffed suspect.
Jose Medina, 46, is accused of using excessive force while in an interview room with the suspect at the 3rd Police District station. If convicted of the misdemeanor charge, he faces up to 180 days in jail and a fine of $1,000. No date has been set for his arraignment in D.C. Superior Court. Medina, who was assigned to the 3rd District, has been with the department 22 years. He has been placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of the case.
Officials said Medina has been working a desk job since the matter was brought to the police department's attention last year. The department recommended that he be suspended without pay, police spokeswoman Traci Hughes said.
