The Body Politic: Pumping Up the Presidential Candidates

Friday, February 1, 2008

Terminator Arnold Schwarzenegger, who is, incidentally, also the two-term governor of California, endorsed John McCain yesterday, becoming the latest action figure to lend his muscular support to a candidate for president. This follows the news that Hulk Hogan is backing Barack Obama, Sylvester Stallone is for McCain, and Chuck Norris is standing behind Mike Huckabee.

It used to be noteworthy when a socially conscious musician did a benefit concert (see: Bruce Springsteen, circa 2004). Now, in a time of peril, both economic and international, maybe it's all about the muscles.

For a complex world and time, these men represent simple answers. Through their physical prowess they're able to solve socioeconomic problems, terrorist threats and dirty diapers. And for those who think this is just an anomaly of the 2008 race, don't worry. They'll be back.
