AUGUSTA, Maine, Feb. 2 -- Former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney won Maine's nonbinding Republican caucuses Saturday.
With 68 percent of precincts reporting, Romney had 52 percent of the vote. Sen. John McCain (Ariz.) trailed with 21 percent, Rep. Ron Paul (Tex.) was third with 19 percent, and former Arkansas governor Mike Huckabee had 6 percent.
The municipal voting, the first step toward electing 18 Maine delegates to the Republican National Convention, is taking place in public schools, Grange halls, fire stations and town halls across the state. Most of it was held on Saturday; more will take place Sunday and later this month.
Maine Democrats will hold their presidential preference votes at municipal caucuses on Feb. 10.
