Last Season:11-3, with a 24-21 loss to Kansas in the Orange Bowl.
Top Players Lost: LB Vince Hall, LB Xavier Adibi, T Duane Brown, WR Josh Morgan, WR Eddie Royal, DE Chris Ellis.
Needs Filled: Four senior wide receivers departed, and with them went 97 percent of the catches made by Virginia Tech wideouts last season. The Hokies curbed the loss by landing six wide receivers, led by speedster Dyrell Roberts.
Best in Class: Ryan Williams might be Tech's best running back recruit since Kevin Jones. Several recruiting services ranked him the third-best running back in the nation, thanks largely to his 4.4-second time in the 40-yard dash.
Sleeper: If bloodlines matter, rover Jeron Gouveia could be a gem from the class -- he's the son of former Washington Redskins linebacker Kurt Gouveia.
One Who Got Away: Wide receiver T.J. Lawrence from Lakeland, Fla., decided on Florida late, but the Hokies viewed signing him a long shot, anyway.
Coach Frank Beamer: "I think there's going to be more opportunity for freshmen to play next year than there's been in years at Tech."
