In general, exorcists are supposed to follow a single set of procedures. According to the 1999 rules released by the Vatican in an 84-page document, priests begin the ritual by praying, sprinkling holy water and laying hands on the victim, making the sign of the cross and repeating the Litany of the Saints.

This Story

Next, the priests command the demon to identify itself by name and to relinquish its hold on the possessed. More prayers, holy water and Gospel readings follow, repeated as necessary.
