Exit polls showed that Barack Obama beat Hillary Rodham Clinton by holding down her edge among white women and winning majorities in these groups:

¿ White voters. Obama won 52 percent of their votes, a bigger share than he got in any previous Southern contest. He beat Clinton by 18 points among white men, his first significant showing among Southern white men.

¿ Independents. Obama won a higher percentage of votes among independents, as well as liberals, rural voters and those who frequently attend religious services, than he did in any previous Southern contest.

¿ Latinos. Obama got 54 percent of their votes, though they make up only a fraction of Virginia Democratic voters.

¿ Senior citizens and young people. Obama beat Clinton for the first time among seniors and won 75 percent of the votes of those younger than 30.

¿ November-focused voters. Among voters who said that the most important candidate quality was electability in the general election, Obama won seven in 10 of their votes, his largest advantage with those voters in the 24 states in which exit polls of Democrats have been conducted.
