Jeff Teague scored 26 points and Wake Forest shocked No. 2 Duke, 86-73, last night in Winston-Salem, N.C.
The Demon Deacons ended the Blue Devils' 12-game winning streak and gave first-year coach Dino Gaudio his first big victory since taking over for the late Skip Prosser.
James Johnson added 24 points for the Demon Deacons (16-8, 6-5 ACC), who claimed their first victory against a top-five team since they also knocked off the then-No. 4 Blue Devils on Feb. 2, 2005.
Wake Forest won its third straight game, improved to 14-1 on its home court and snapped a five-game losing streak in the series on the strength of a 17-2 run midway through the second half and some smothering defense, forcing the Blue Devils into a season-high 22 turnovers.
"Tonight, we played like we've already done something, and the team that had to win won," Duke Coach Mike Krzyzewski said. "We have to always play like we have to win. That's the sign of a champion. That's a part of learning. We have some young guys who haven't been champions before, and they're trying to learn how to be that. Sometimes the best lessons are ones that are taught in defeat."
The Demon Deacons held Duke (22-2, 10-1) without a field goal for more than seven minutes in building the first double-figure lead of the game for either team, with Teague's three-point play with 4 minutes 58 seconds left making it 72-62.
¿ VIRGINIA 79, BOSTON COLLEGE 74: Mamadi Diane scored 20 points, including a key three-pointer with 45 seconds left, as the visiting Cavaliers ended their seven-game losing streak.
Sean Singletary, the team's leading scorer at 19 points per game entering play, finished with 16 points, but it was his playmaking ability that paid off in the end.
Singletary was credited with four assists. He also fed others many times, leading to good ball movement and open jumpers.
Laurynas Mikalauskas had 13 points and Mike Scott 11 for the Cavaliers (12-12, 2-9 ACC.
Tyrese Rice led the Eagles (13-11, 4-7) with 28 points on 11-for-24 shooting.
¿ NOTRE DAME 71, RUTGERS 68: In Piscataway, N.J., Tory Jackson had 17 points, 10 assists and 8 rebounds as the No. 20 Fighting Irish handed the Scarlet Knights their sixth straight loss.
Kyle McAlarney added 16 points to help Notre Dame (19-5, 9-3 Big East) win for the 17th time in 20 games. Anthony Farmer had 16 points for Rutgers (10-17, 2-12).
¿ UCLA 56, USC 46: Darren Collison scored 14 points, Kevin Love added 13 and the visiting Bruins remained atop the Pacific-10 standings by a half-game.
