Registering handguns
Residents who owned revolvers before the ban was passed were allowed to register and keep them in their homes. D.C. police officers can register personal handguns to carry while off duty. Security firms licensed by the city can register handguns and issue them to guards who are trained and certified by D.C. police. The guards are not allowed to take the guns home if there is a suitable place to store them at work.
Types of handguns allowed
Residents who owned handguns before the ban was passed were allowed to register and keep only revolvers. An off-duty D.C. police officer is allowed to carry a semiautomatic Glock 19 or Glock 26. Armed guards working on private or city-owned property are allowed to carry revolvers only. The city does not regulate the weapons of federal law enforcement officers or armed guards working on federal property.
Rifles and shotguns
Residents 21 or older who pass background checks and written tests can register rifles with a minimum barrel length of 16 inches or shotguns with a barrel length of at least 20 inches, provided the weapons are not semiautomatics.
Storage at home
Except for firearms carried by off-duty police officers, registered revolvers, rifles and shotguns must be kept unloaded and either disassembled or trigger-locked, including handguns brought home by armed guards.
