CYCLING: Taylor Phinney, 17, barely missed clinching an automatic bid to Beijing last week in Denmark. After a 10th-place finish in the 4-km pursuit, Phinney lost the overall World Cup title to Ukrainian Volodymyr Dudya, who needed a tiebreaker to wrest the crown from Phinney. . . . American Sarah Hammer won a bronze medal in her third straight World Cup 3-km individual pursuit and teammate Jennie Reed took a silver in the women's keiren. Each secured second place overall in the World Cup standings.

TRACK AND FIELD: Allen Johnson, 36, the Washington-born hurdler who won an Olympic gold in 1996, showed he is ready to challenge for another Olympic berth with a victory in the 60-meter hurdles at a meet last weekend in Fayetteville, Ark. Johnson has said he intends to retire after Beijing. . . . Adam Nelson notched a world-leading throw of 73 feet 6 inches -- the third best of all time -- in the shot put in Fayetteville.

SWIMMING: Russian Natalia Pankina and Bulgarian Peter Stoychev have dominated the 15-km event in open-water racing. Each claimed their third straight World Cup victories this past weekend.

WATER POLO: The U.S. men's national team took its lumps against world power Serbia in a nationally televised exhibition Saturday in Belgrade on national Water Polo Day. The Serbians topped the Americans, 14-6, in a match that featured a pair of goals by Tony Azevedo and kicked off a month-long training tour for the U.S. men in Europe.

RHYTHMIC GYMNASTICS: Julie Zetlin of Bethesda finished third in the all-around competition at the 2008 Rhythmic Challenge on Monday in Colorado Springs. Lisa Wang of Illinois won and Rachel Marmer of California was second.
