Maya Moore tied a season high with 31 points and moved into second place on the school's freshman scoring list, and top-ranked Connecticut ran away from Marquette, 95-63, last night in Hartford, Conn.
Moore made her first nine shots and had 25 first-half points for the Huskies (25-1, 12-1 Big East), who led 60-22 at intermission.
It was the third time in the past four games that Moore has outscored the other team in the first half. She left the game with just more than 11 minutes left and U-Conn. up 83-45. Moore made 11 of her 15 shots and was 5 of 7 from three-point range. She had nine rebounds and three blocked shots.
Tina Charles also tied her season high with 23 points to go with 10 rebounds, her 13th double-double this season. Renee Montgomery added 16 points for the Huskies. Ketia Swanier, making only her second start of the season, chipped in with eight points and nine assists, seven in the first half.
Angel Robinson led Marquette (14-12, 6-7) with 22 points. Krystal Ellis, who came in averaging 19 points, had just 11, all but two in the second half. She missed her first five shots and was 4 of 14 from the floor, 1 of 5 from three-point range.
Moore came into the game ranked fourth among U-Conn. freshman with 438 points. She passed Tamika Williams (444) less than three minutes in with a three-pointer, and passed Charles (456) with 5 minutes 6 seconds left in the first half with another three-pointer. Svetlana Abrosimova (1997-98) holds the Huskies' freshman scoring record at 538 points.
Connecticut opened with a 16-4 run, led by seven early points from Moore. A no-look pass from Swanier to Charles gave the Huskies a 22-7 lead five minutes into the game, with Robinson scoring all seven Marquette points.
The Huskies made 18 of their first 23 shots. An 18-0 run made it 42-11. Ellis ended the streak with a layup, her first points of the game.
AMERICAN 63, ARMY 51: The visiting Eagles made 17 of 21 free throw attempts in the second half to seal their seventh straight win.
Talicia Jackson scored 14 points to lead American (14-12, 8-3 Patriot League), and reserve Liz Leer had 12 points and nine rebounds. Nalini Hawkins (Bethesda-Chevy Chase) scored 16 points for the Black Knights (16-10, 7-4).
HOLY CROSS 56, NAVY 53: Elizabeth Campbell scored 14 points, and the host Crusaders (15-11, 8-3 Patriot League) handed the Midshipmen their 10th loss in 12 games. Cassie Consedine had 17 points and 11 rebounds to lead Navy (5-20, 2-9).
