D.C. United has offered a tryout to midfielder-forward Santino Quaranta, who began his MLS career in Washington at age 16 but never developed into a full-time player and was traded twice and waived in the past 19 months.

Quaranta, 23, is scheduled to practice with the club at the RFK Stadium training grounds starting Thursday. He has also been invited to travel with the team to San Antonio this weekend for the final stage of preseason camp and three friendlies against MLS opponents, General Manager Dave Kasper said yesterday.

United drafted Quaranta, a Baltimore native, in 2001 and watched him score five goals in 16 regular season appearances his rookie year. Injuries, however, limited him to 46 matches the following four-plus seasons and, in the summer of 2006, he was dealt to Los Angeles.

He scored three goals for the Galaxy late that season, but played in only six games the following year before being traded to New York for a conditional draft pick. Hampered by a foot injury, Quaranta made only three brief appearances for the Red Bulls before being waived last month.

If Quaranta earns a roster spot with United, he would likely have to accept a significant pay cut after earning $105,000 last year.
