Belch-Free School Buses
Nearly two dozen D.C. school buses will be getting equipment upgrades to reduce air pollution.
A $224,540 grant from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency will fund a retrofit of 22 buses used to transport 4,000 special needs students. The four-year-old buses, the largest vehicles in the fleet, are scheduled to be fitted with filters to reduce the amount of particulate matter, volatile organic compounds and carbon monoxide released into the atmosphere.
The use of Catalyzed Continuously Regenerating Technology is expected to curb targeted emissions by 85 to 90 percent.
Approximately 630 bus routes are traveled twice a day from September through June.
Student Video Contest
Bridgestone Firestone Tires is promoting driver safety and education through a nationwide student video competition.
Winners of the 2008 Safety Scholars Video Contest will receive $5,000 college scholarships for producing the most compelling videos conveying life-saving messages about auto and tire safety.
"Because car crashes claim the lives of more 16- to 21-year-olds than any other cause, we feel safety education is a priority," said Christine Karbowiak, vice president of public affairs for Bridgestone Americas Holding.
In addition to three college scholarships, creators of the top 10 entries will receive a set of Bridgestone tires. Their videos will appear on the contest Web site and on several video-sharing Web sites.
Videos can be 25 seconds or 55 seconds long. A panel of judges will choose the top 10 videos from the first 300 entries received between May 27 and June 24 .
