Owners of small businesses can dispose of hazardous waste from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on April 9, July 23 and Oct. 1 at the Interstate 66 Transfer Station Complex at 4618 West Ox Rd. in Fairfax County.
Businesses qualify as conditionally exempt, small-quantity generators if they generate 220 pounds or 27 gallons of hazardous waste each month. Businesses that fall into that category most frequently are print shops, auto repair shops, building contractors, exterminators, landscape contractors and property management companies.
According to the county's recycling operation, hazardous waste disposal companies usually have a minimum amount of waste they will pick up. They usually charge a minimum fee that typically exceeds the cost of disposal.
To address that problem, the county offers a more economical way to dispose of small quantities of hazardous waste. Disposal charges are based on the amount of material.
Businesses interested in participating can find rules, a list of materials accepted and associated disposal costs at http://www.fairfaxcounty.gov/recycling.
