Horizon Foundation Gives $3.5 Million to Hospital

The Horizon Foundation has committed $3.5 million to Howard County General Hospital for its ongoing expansion, bringing its total donations since late last year to $4.3 million.

The funding represents the largest gift to a single institution in the nonprofit foundation's 10-year history. Other grants by Horizon have been earmarked for an emergency behavioral health unit, improved access to care and development of a geriatric center.

The expansion, which will add 110,686 square feet, is expected to be complete in fall 2009. It features a pavilion that will house three inpatient floors.

Renovation of another 122,970 square feet is slated to be completed by fall 2011. In addition, a 550-car parking facility is being built on the southeast corner of the hospital campus in Columbia.
