A Trip From Athens to Santorini

I'm considering a trip from Athens to Santorini, and since flights are expensive, the ferry seems the way to go. How much do these generally cost and how long is the journey?
To get to that incomparable island, you'll need to travel from Athens to the port town of Piraeus, a trip that takes 20 minutes to an hour, depending on traffic. Subway service on the Athens metro is also available. A good source for online ferry booking is Paleologos, at http://www.ferries.gr. Plug in your dates and destination (note: Santorini is officially known as Thira). The trip takes approximately 7 1/2 hours, and an economy ticket costs about $100 for a round-trip fare in May. -- S.V.
