WHAT IT IS: A water-resistant specialty paint that can adhere to porcelain and tile.
WHAT IT COSTS: Homax's Tough as Tile brand retails for about $30 for a kit that contains enough epoxy for one average-sized bathtub. Rust-Oleum offers a version for about $25.
WHO NEEDS IT: Anyone who wants to freshen up a bathroom without investing thousands of dollars, said Deborah Zimmer, spokeswoman for the Paint Quality Institute, the educational arm of specialty-chemicals maker Rohm and Haas. Tub and tile paint provides an inexpensive way to spruce up fixtures or to rid yourself of a dated color scheme. "You're not changing the walls or moving plumbing around," Zimmer said.
WHERE TO FIND IT: Home centers, hardware stores, specialty paint stores and online retailers.
WHAT TO LOOK FOR: Clear instructions. Using these products isn't difficult, but as with all painting projects, you must properly prepare the surface, Zimmer said. "It sets the stage for the product."
